Mark JeffersonDoes anybody really know who they are?
Does anybody really care
to think about it?
I am the phenotype of my genotype,
with conceived dispositions
and received impositions.
I play in this virtual reality game,
Life on Earth.
Here now
who I am
relates to
this physical body,
what it does,
what it thinks,
I think.
Right now I'm trying to decide what I want to do with my life.
It's one of my favorite topics, when I'm not engrossed in some project.
I've been traveling and enjoying the life of leisure with my girlfriend, Eryn Roth, for 18 months. We're a bad influence on each other — but good!
And then in December (2002), we settled in Colorado Springs for the winter. Eryn got this idea to get a new career and go back to school. I needed an office and a phone connection from which to do some computer work.
I develop database software. It's my best paying skill. It's enjoyable work. I've been programming for 12 years! — my longest "career." But it would be fun to learn a new skill for awhile, too.
Summers we live at my house in Gustavus, Alaska (pop. 400), surrounded by Glacier Bay National Park, at the south end of the largest wilderness area in North America; a grand place for sea kayaking, seafood, bushwhacking, mountain climbing, wildlife, and wilderness adventures.
Last winter (2001-2002) we drove cross-country from Seattle to Miami (6 weeks), visited friends and our families along the way; then flew to South America for 9 weeks, exploring Peru and Bolivia; then drove back to Seattle, including an 8 weeks stint in Durango, Colorado, working and skiing at Durango Mountain Ski Resort.
For someone that likes to believe I'm living for here and now, I sure spend a lot of time documenting the moment for later reference. I'm Mr. Write-it-down, Mr. Organization, and Mr. Look-it-up.
Photography has been big in my life (since 1974), and I've accumulated about 40 thousand slides. My photos have been published a few times and my photographs are featured in a book about the Grand Canyon: "The Intimate Grand", Northland Press, 1985, out of print. I don't like the book, and maybe someday I will web publish the original mockup that was rejected by the publisher.
In March 2002, I succumbed and bought my first digital camera. The resolution isn't as good as film, and it's luck to get a good candid due to the delay between pressing the shutter release and the moment that the picture is actually recorded; but if it wasn't for this digital camera, I probably wouldn't have this web site done, yet.
I like...
mantra: Happiness is a present attitude, not a future condition.
